Mountain Ranges & Nature Trails

1. Roháče

Romantic?

Rendezvous?

Roháče.

As one of the first places, my Slovakian partner took me for a date, I can personally assure you this gorgeous hiking trail promises to deepen your connection as you walk hand-in-hand through the mountainous terrain and finally gaze upon the glistening Roháčske plesá (Roháče Lakes). These lakes are surrounded by magnificent peaks and forests, and the crystal-clear water is a sight to behold.

For adventure-seeking couples, there are several hiking trails that lead to the lakes, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding scenery. The hikes vary in difficulty, ranging from easy walks to more challenging treks, but all offer a unique and unforgettable experience.

My partner and I enjoyed this hike during the winter, and were captivated by the frozen lakes and snow-capped peaks. If you’re planning to visit Slovakia in the summer months and looking for one of the most romantic things to do, I strongly recommend packing a picnic blanket, a polaroid camera, and local delicacies like the famous Slovakian sheep cheese called bryndza and fresh loaf of Kabáč (pillow-like bread). Sip on a glass of prosecco with your lover, and capture these moments as you fall deeper in love with your partner as well as Slovakia.

3. Slovenský Raj National Park

Literally translating to Slovakian Paradise, this national park holds true to its name with rocky plateaus, deep-cut river canyons, gorges with glamorous waterfalls, and a huge underground world of caves and chasms.

Primaeval forests and interlacing streams form some of Slovakia’s most picturesque hiking terrain. With over 300km of walking trails, there are plenty of opportunities for couples to explore and discover the park’s stunning natural beauty.

For a truly unforgettable experience, take the 2/4 hour ascent up the dramatic Suchá Belá Gorge, securing your lover’s hand for support and tightening the grip as needed. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the chance to see rare orchid species.

If you’re looking for a shorter, yet still dramatic hike, head to Biele Vody, just 15 minutes northeast of Dedinky. Follow the green trail up Zejmarská Gorge, and in just 50 minutes, you’ll reach a piercing viewpoint that will steal a piece of your heart.

Throughout the park, you’ll have the chance to spot European honey buzzards, golden eagles, and even 2000 butterfly species. And for those looking to spend the night, there’s accommodation available at Kláštorisko Chata, a reconstructed 13th-century Carthusian monastery that promises to inspire romance.

4. High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry)

If you’re looking to add some romance to your next adventure, High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) is the perfect destination. The stunning scenery, ranging from snow-capped peaks to crystal-clear lakes, creates an enchanting backdrop that’s perfect for cosy moments and shared experiences.

For couples who love the great outdoors, High Tatras offers endless opportunities for exploration.

The region boasts over 600 km of hiking trails, each offering its unique beauty and challenges. Some of the most beautiful hikes to do there are Zelené Pleso, Mount Rysy, Mount Kriváň, Štrbské Pleso, and Popradské Pleso. 5. Orava Castle

As you wander through the castle’s winding halls and explore its beautiful courtyards, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported back in time to a bygone era. Vampire aficionados may recognise its stern silhouette from Murnau’s classic 1922 movie Nosferatu, but the castle’s history is easily as interesting as its silver-screen appearances.

Navigating the castle, visitors tour numerous architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance. Hair-raisingly steep stairs connect various castle chambers, which are draped with bearskin rugs and filled with magnificent furniture and weaponry.

The castle’s stunning location atop a rocky hill, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, makes it an ideal spot for a romantic picnic.

6. Spiš Castle

Spiš Castle is a magnificent and romantic medieval fortress located in the eastern part of Slovakia. This stunning UNESCO World Heritage site is an ideal destination for couples who want to explore the history of the region while also experiencing a romantic getaway.

As you approach the castle, you’ll be struck by its impressive size and commanding position atop a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. Couples can take a leisurely stroll through the castle’s courtyards and admire the stunning Gothic and Romanesque architecture. The castle’s many towers and turrets offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, making it a perfect spot for a romantic photo.

After your visit to Spiš Castle, take a short 5-minute drive to discover the hidden gem of Sivá Brada. This extraordinary location is one of the few remaining travertine hills in Slovakia and features a small pond at the top with bubbling mineral water. Also located near Spiš Castle is the charming town of Spišská Kapitula, often referred to as the ‘Vatican of Slovakia.’ This picturesque town boasts an abundance of Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque architecture, making it a must-see destination.

7. Trenčín Castle

Step into a fairytale world with your significant other and visit the charming city of Trenčín, just a day trip away from Bratislava. But once you’ve explored the castle, head to the charming Peace Square (Mierové Námestie), where you can stroll hand in hand with your loved one while checking out the many restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops. Be sure to climb the City Tower (Mestská Veža) inside the square for an even more breathtaking view of both the castle and the square.

Cities & Towns

Unquestionably one of my favourite cities in Slovakia, Žilina holds a special place in my heart owing to the many times I’ve visited and experienced this city across the seasons. It makes for an idyllic destination to do a couple photoshoot and capture the romance and gentle moments as you weave through the cobbled streets, dance under the arches or relax in the main park (Park Ľudovíta Štúra).

Another romantic activity is to visit the famous Fountain of Love in the centre of the main square. Here, you can secure a love lock as a symbol of your commitment to each other, adding your own love story to the thousands of others that adorn the fountain.

Additionally, a romantic evening walk along the Váh River, with its serene views and picturesque scenery, is a must-do activity for couples visiting Žilina.

14. Komárno

If you want to get a little taste of Hungary in Slovakia, then Komárno is definitely the place to see. As one of the oldest medieval towns in Slovakia, Komárno has a very interesting history. It used to be made of two parts: the “old town” and the “new town”. However, after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the city split up across the Slovak-Hungarian border.

Today, the former “old town” is present-day Komárno, while the former “new town” became the city of Komárom in Hungary.

These two cities are still connected by the Elisabeth Bridge, which offers stunning views for visitors. What makes Komárno a magical gem is the candy-coloured Courtyard of Europe – an eclectic mix of charm, colours and cultural buildings breathe unique character into this quirky town. #DisneyVibes
